Gap has it's humble beginnings from San Francisco in 1969. Interestingly, the original Gap carried Levi's and LPs for their merchandise. As the popularity grew, so did the number of locations in California. The original founders (the Fisher family) remain actively involved in the company to this day.
Currently, the Gap brand carries the weight and success of other familiar brands: Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime, Athleta. With over 3,000 stores worldwide, Gap remains the largest specialty clothing retailer in the US. By utilizing these different brands to cater to personalities, Gap has remained relevant and popular through big changes in in the fashion industry. Banana Republic, for instance, aims for a more sophisticated look while Old Navy appeals to a younger, hipper crowd.
